Everyday we read articles, studies and a lot of material trying to anticipate what the future will be, we at BM also develop studies and activities trying to do the same, the GTO – Global Technology Outlook is one of this material we publish every year, it is an analysis trying to define some trends and even pointing to some directions and guessing what is going to be the new big thing, and with that prepare the company and drive the investments to areas and developing products and service that will drive the company to a bright future. Another material we produce every year is the “5 in 5” identifying the next top 5 technologies that will cause a society transformation in the next 5 years. Another material is the HorizonWatch produced and developed by a community of collaborators and lead by Bill Chamberlain.
This is a very hard work, according to think Neils Bohr: “Prediction is very difficult, especially about the future. – Niels Bohr, 1885-1962, Danish Physicist, Nobel Prize Winner“, but even knowing that is not a easy task IBM is very well positioned in our future strategy, if we look to the past, which predictions we made, technology investments we decide, and strategic directions we took based on the GTO, we are very successful, we predict Cloud years ago, predict e-business, predict the mobile many years ago when one of the GTO predict the pervasive computing.
This week I read an article at the American Way magazine, written by Michio Kaku, it is worth a read, he point to a future very challenging, what we see today will be nothing comparing what he defines as the future of computing, changes in society, the way we will live, biotechnology, medicine and other interesting predictions.
About the computers in the future Kaku wrote: “In the future, we will literally take control of computers and have them carry out our wishes,” he adds. “IBM futurists think that’s how we’ll communicate with computers in a decade or so. We’ve got a long way to go, but we’ll communicate telepathically and won’t even think twice about it. We’ll be walking down the street and make a restaurant reservation, just by thinking about it.”
Can you imagine this? What a change we will face, how we will use this kind of technology in our life? of course there is no guarantee if it will really happen, how long will take to get there, but if we look what IBM did with Watson, maybe one day will be possible to use technology this way.
